Shape Optimization of Rectangular Plates for Vibration-Based Fatigue Testing

Abstract In vibration-based high cycle fatigue testing, a base-excited plate is driven at frequency resonant mode until failure. one method involving cantilevered square plate, often referred to as the “two-stripe” sometimes used because it exists frequencies and produces large uniaxial bending stresses along free edge that are suitable for testing. The purpose of this work precisely investigate how dimensions more generally rectangular influence performance when two-stripe mode. Included results many thousands modal analysis simulations. From these simulations, general trends with respect frequencies, isolation, stress fields in examined. Results select geometries were then experimentally validated using 1000 lb shaker. It shown that, compared plates, plates 1.37 length-to-width ratio exhibit favorable distributions isolation. Recommendations also given quickly preferable planning test based around operating setup.
